Google eats Youtube

More interesting strategic news from big players in the digital world.

Typically I haven’t seen this huge deal mentioned much in danish newpapers. I can´t help thinking if it is because the journalist don´t know  much of YouTube? It was a major story on german prime time news. But here it gets no major mention????? Sometimes we are just too provinsial and selfsufficiant in this country. It is about time we start thinking on more global levels. Business AND politics.

It was, however, all over TV2 tuesday morning, and rippled thorugh any and all online media throughout the day – guess the printed press has given up on competing on news value (as they may as well do). I wonder if we won’t be seeing a couple of major background stories, however. That is, once bloggers and online media have done the research for the offline journos.

There has been a few tiny mentions around the danish press. Apart from that, the press is just meeting the requirements of the audience. Google acquiring YouTube is not really a deal that carries great consequence for anyone apart from the YouTube backers/founders/shareholders. Its not very different from Googles multi-billion dollar bid for search + ad on myspace. This is basically what google operations is all about, for now anyway.

For you and me, this is interesting news, and to some extent relevant. It does not, however, hold much relevance for the danish newsconsumers in general.

Apart from that I entirely agree that a more global outlook would look good on the danish mediascape. Although I am not certain that our situation varies greatly from the rest of the world (or europe anyway).

Well TV2 is also becoming one of the smartest players in the danish media marked, so I am not surpriced if they covered it well. I have seen there has been some mentioning in the business papers. But the funny thing is that these things often are relatively unknown UNTIL some major money transaction takes place. Same thing with Skype. Even with millions of acitve users world wide the mentioning of digital worlds and communities reach the danish press late. Some times it just seems like there is a parallel universe where the internationally minded younger users are way ahead of the off line generation which generally is less focused on the use and more on the money.
Like with Arto.dk If there hadn’t been critical mentioning of that place in the media, it could have continued with more than half a million young users and most adults would still not have had a clue.

The fact that relevant social technologies receive no editorial until an acquisition takes place, is probably very true.
